FROM Ladakh’s stark terrain to the global stage of Venice, Skarma Sonam Tashi is taking his mountain vocabulary international.
The Delhi- and Ladakh-based artist has been selected as one of five to present at the Indian Pavilion at the 61st Venice Biennale, curated by Amin Jaffer, with In Minor Keys opening in May 2026. Trained in Jammu and Shantiniketan and mentored by noted collector Lekha Poddar through a fine arts grant from Saloni Doshi’s art foundation, Tashi works with recycled cardboard, papier mâché and natural pigments in a sustained exploration titled Preservation through Art: Mountains and Materials. His practice, grounded in ecology and material memory, has already travelled through the India Art Fair with Sa Ladakh and Abir India. And though we hear she’s absolutely chuffed, all Doshi told this diarist was, “It is deeply rewarding to witness our grant artist take his practice to the Venice Biennale.”
