Deepanjali Shekhar (B.1992, Patna, Bihar, India) completed her BFA and MFA, Graphics, Kala Bhavan, Visva Bharati University, West Bengal, 2016. Her works have been exhibited in multiple group shows at Apre Art house, Mumbai, Space Studios, Baroda, 2024, Gallery 78, Hyderabad, 2023, Priyasri Art Gallery, Mumbai, 2022, Samsara Art Festival, Shantiniketan, 2017, Shilpa Kala Academy, Dhaka, Bangladesh, Lalit Kala Akademi, Bhubaneswar, Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, 2016 and 2014, National Art Gallery, Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2015, Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata, Visva-bharati, Shantiniketan and India Habitat Center, New Delhi, 2014.

Deepanjali’s practice explores unspoken emotions through intricate imagery, drawing from personal experiences and studies of botany and microbiology. Being raised in the conservative society of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and later transitioning to Gujarat, she uses botanical elements as metaphors for suppressed feelings, symbolizing feminine energy, beauty and freedom.

She uses coffee- and tea-toned paper to evoke the feel of an old diary, where nature and the body blend together, reflecting one another. Having explored diverse media like printmaking, etching, stop-motion animation and videography, her recent shift to painting has deepened her connection to her work. Inspired by her time in Shantiniketan, her practice is a journey of self-discovery, using nature’s symbols as a means of expression.

Deepanjali Shekhar lives and works in Vadodara, Gujarat, India.
