Shanmukha Rao Tamada (b. 1988, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India) completed his BFA in Painting from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam (2007–2011). His work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions across India, including Pleasurable Anxieties, Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, 2023; Autobiography of a Visual Mechanic, Bhart Art Gallery, 2023; The Complexity of Democracy, curated by Anita Dube, Art Heritage Gallery, 2025; and Siren Lullaby in a Forgotten Realm, curated by Premjish Achari, State Art Gallery, Hyderabad, 2024.

He has received several grants and awards including the Junior Fellowship Grant, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, 2018; S.G. Vasudev Scholarships, 2016 and 2017; Human Resource Development Scholarship, 2014; State Art Gallery Award, Hyderabad, 2018; Kalanand Art Award, Mumbai, 2017; and the Bhiku Ram Jain Art Award, Delhi, 2011.

Shanmukha has also participated in prominent national art camps such as the Auramah Valley Art Festival, 2022; Cartist Jaipur Art Festival, 2016; and “Virasat” Lalit Kala Camp, Dehradun, 2014. His works have appeared in significant curated and annual shows including the CIMA Awards Show, 2017; Dhoomimal Art Gallery, 2016–2017; and the AIFACS Annual Exhibitions in 2014, 2016, and 2017.

Shanmukha’s artistic practice combines introspective themes with architectural and structural imagery. Omitting the human figure, his work reflects on urban alienation, memory, and the psychological dimensions of space. His layered surfaces and obstructed grids reinterpret built environments, offering visual critiques of modern life and urban transformation. Through this abstraction, he explores how environments shape perception and internal states.

Shanmukha Rao Tamada lives and works in New Delhi, India.
