Parul Gupta, (b. 1980, New Delhi, India) completed her B.Com from Delhi University (2000) and her M.F.A. from Nottingham Trent University (2011).
Parul Gupta works at the intersection of art and architecture through an expanded practice of drawing that includes site-specific installations, sculptures, kinetics, photographs, and works on paper. Her work explores how spatial perception is shaped by light, structure, and movement—examining how architectural spaces influence the way we see and experience our surroundings.
Her long-running project Extending the Line, initiated during a 2013 residency in Mumbai, began with observing the way light creates lines and forms in space. These compositions, formed by shadow and structure, led her to experiment with drawing as a responsive act—where lines move beyond the paper into real space, questioning presence, absence, and perception.
In her site-specific works, architectural elements become active participants. By creating line-based spatial interventions, Gupta invites viewers to move within the artwork, shifting their perception through parallax and rhythm. Her installations are temporary, shaped by the site’s unique conditions, and aim to reimagine how we interact with space.
Gupta uses repetition, geometry, and coded systems to create works that are both methodical and meditative. Through her practice, she encourages viewers to notice the subtle shifts—of light, line, and body—that constantly shape our lived environment, offering a deeper, more embodied experience of space.
She has exhibited at solo shows at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (2011); India Habitat Centre (2012); “Sarai Reader 09”, Devi Art Foundation (2012); Gallery Lakeeren (2014); Exhibit 320 (2015); “Let’s Proceed in Parts”, Instituto Cervantes (2016); “When is Space?”, JKK (2018) and at Nature Morte (2021). She has also participated in multiple group shows, including Khoj International Artists Association (2013) and Cona Alternative Space (2013) among others.
She was the winner of Sovereign Asian Art Award 2023 and has been shortlisted for Shergill Sundaram Installation Art Award 2019.
Parul Gupta lives and works in Delhi NCR, India.
