Jyotiprakash Sethy (b. 1985, Cuttack, Odisha, India) completed his BVA From Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, 2010, and MFA From RMT Music & Arts University, Gwalior, 2013.

Jyotiprakash’s body of work primarily explores abstract forms through the medium of soft pastels, representing an honest attempt to express his ideas on the culture of urbanisation and the bustle of monotonous routine. Employing a meticulous layering technique, Sethy gradually builds up his compositions before delicately erasing each layer, revealing inner moments and imbuing his works with a soft, luminous motion and vibrant tones. His art serves as a reflection on the human experience, encompassing past, present, and future endeavours and struggles. By observing the intricacies of human existence, Sethy explores themes of time, effort, and adversity, often integrating imagery that reflects the complexities of contemporary life. His works flesh out the idea of a sense of alienation in mundane human lives, drawing on the isolation in the midst of crowds. He attempts to demonstrate his disengagement and comprehension of living his life in solitude, in the present day.

In the modern world, we seem to be resistant to such powerful imagery, more apparent in earlier cultures. A stark contrast to the present, earlier, people appear to have viewed the passage of time with a bit more ambivalence, situationally, and as part of a greater cosmic interplay.

He has participated in various solo and group shows across India including Transcendence, Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai (2023); Trouvaille, Art Konsult, New Delhi (2023); Marred Reality, Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi (2019); Voice for the Voiceless, Tansen Kalavithika, Gwalior (2018); State Lalit Kala Akademi, Odisha (2019); In Between, Tansen Kalavithika, Gwalior (2013); Barcode, Tansen Kalavithika, Gwalior (2012); and the Annual Exhibition of Khallikot Arts & Craft College, Odisha (2007–2010).

He is the recipient of the National Award at the 59th National Exhibition of Art, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi (2018); UP National Lalit Kala Akademi Award, Prayagraj (2019); Abir First Take, Ahmedabad, (2019); Late Shri Gunavant Hanamant Nagarkar Award for Best Painting by The Bombay Art Society (2020); Odisha State Award (2021); and the State Gallery of Art All India Art Competition and Exhibition Award (2021).

Jyotiprakash lives and works in New Delhi, India.
