Born in Kerala and raised in Delhi, Ganga questions the influence of one’s roots or the culture they grew up in on the creation of identity. Weighing them against each other, Ganga’s practice explores her ambivalence regarding her own cultural identity with the use of watercolour and gouache. By visualising her anecdotes, she brings to life the multiple identities she harbours, that constantly remind her of her hybrid state. Fictitious creatures as well those from her observations, find their way into her works as she talks about the relationship between self, home. Inspired by Indian and Persian Miniature traditions, Ganga treats each line with intricacy and precision. She is also intrigued by the rhythmic patterns observed in her surroundings and calls their presence in her work an extension of her and her musicality.
Ganga Narayanan lives and works in New Delhi, India.
