Employing recycled material, Bhushan sculpts using paper, wood, and metal. He draws from a lineage of collage, expanding it through papier-mâché works on flat surfaces. Inspired by the tropical environment and the transformative effects of heat and degradation on materials, he explores the imposition of colonial aesthetics and endeavours to reclaim visual languages. He looks at Kinetic Art as a point of departure in his sculpting process, drawing inspiration from the concrete construction around his residence. Designing metallic structures that are an ode to the ingenuity of artisans in the suburbs of Bombay who fashion utility objects from simple materials. His ‘Sound Sculptures’ mirror modernist architectural metal structures except they are like gargoyles that spout music from speakers.

Bhushan Bhombale lives and works in Virar, Maharashtra, India.
